More custom than the crane-in prefabs. More predictable than a contractor. Here's exactly how SHAPE compares to the other ways to build an ADU in the Bay Area.

    Where each one wins

Abodu and Villa are great when your lot is flat, has a wide side-yard for a crane, and one of their standard models fits how you want to live. You trade customization for speed and a single-SKU experience.

Stick-built with a general contractor gives you full customization, but you pay for it in schedule risk, allowances that grow, and 9–14 months of active construction on your property.

SHAPE is the middle path: architect-led design tailored to your lot and family, built in a factory to prefab-level tolerances, on a fixed price with a 2–4 month build. We take the lots the crane-in players turn down, and we deliver in half the time of a stick-built.

    Frequently asked

Is SHAPE more expensive than Abodu or Villa?
SHAPE Model 1 starts at $223,000 all-in on a typical lot, versus Abodu's publicly listed ~$278,000 and Villa's ~$299,000 starting prices. Hillside and tight-access SHAPE projects use a separate $400,000–$750,000 range because they require specialized foundations, access planning, and site work.
Why can't Abodu or Villa build on my sloped or tight-access lot?
Their process delivers the ADU as a single fully-assembled box that a crane sets in one lift. That requires a wide staging area, direct crane sightline, and a mostly flat pad. SHAPE ships in modular sections, which fit through narrower access and land on stepped or engineered foundations built for slope.
Are you faster than a contractor doing stick-built?
Meaningfully. A typical Bay Area stick-built ADU runs 9–14 months from permit. SHAPE runs 2–4 months from permit because factory fabrication and site work run in parallel.
Can I use my own architect?
Yes. We regularly execute plans developed by an outside architect, and we can also run the full design in-house. Either way you get one contract and one fixed price.
What if my project needs are bigger than an ADU?
SHAPE also builds custom single-family homes and multifamily / retreat projects. Abodu and Villa don't. Same design-build model, same fixed pricing.
